Kicking Off the Season: The Spirit of Inclusion in Varsity Spirit’s CheerABILITIES Program

As we kick off another exciting cheer competition season, I can’t help but feel an immense sense of pride for one of the most meaningful initiatives built within the cheer community—the CheerABILITIES program. This program holds a special place in our hearts, designed to empower athletes with disabilities by welcoming them into the vibrant world of all-star cheer and dance. What started in the early 2000s, when competitions first began offering divisions for athletes with disabilities, has grown into something far greater than we could have imagined. I’m proud that Varsity Spirit was part of that early movement, with CHEERSPORT being one of the first events to offer a CheerABILITIES division.

Today, the program has expanded across the country, now with over 120 teams and 1,000 athletes, each competing in one of three divisions—Exhibition, Novice, and Elite. These divisions allow us to meet athletes where they are, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to step onto the mat and shine in their own unique way. CheerABILITIES athletes perform at more than 150 Varsity Spirit events each year, and I’m especially proud that they have a platform on some of the biggest stages, including the Arena at NCA All-Star Nationals and the USASF Cheerleading Worlds Championship.

But CheerABILITIES, and recently introduced DanceABILITIES, is more than just about competition. It’s about giving athletes the resources and support they need to succeed, not just on the mat, but in life. From the specialized training we offer coaches to the way we’ve designed this program with care, the goal is simple: to create an environment where these athletes can thrive independently. The lessons learned—teamwork, resilience, perseverance—are the same life skills we hope to instill in every athlete who is part of the Varsity Spirit family.

For me, CheerABILITIES represents everything that’s great about cheer and dance. It’s a reminder that this sport is for everyone, and it’s an example of the power of inclusion, unity, and community. These athletes continue to inspire me, and as we head into this new season, I’m excited to see how their incredible performances will touch all of us once again.

CheerABILITIES is more than a competition division—it’s a movement. A movement that celebrates every athlete, every talent, and every victory, big and small. I can’t wait to see what this season holds for them and for the entire Varsity Spirit community. Together, we’re proving that the spirit of cheer and dance knows no limits.
